Member of Commission I DPR RI Sukamta highlighted the many cases of data leakage that occurred in Indonesia and was experienced by a number of government institutions such as KPU, BPJS Health, Ministry of Health, Police and most recently the hacking experienced by Bank Indonesia. According to Sukamta, this data leak case shows the cybersecurity condition in Indonesia is at a very worrying level.
“This is already in the emergency category, it needs immediate and comprehensive handling. Considering that many cybersecurity experts in Indonesia have provided criticism and input that the cybersecurity infrastructure in government institutions is bad, even beginner hackers can easily break into it. If we talk about infrastructure, this means that it concerns regulations, hardware, software, and the availability of human resources,” Sukamta said in a written statement, Saturday (Januari 22, 2022).
This member of the Prosperous Justice Party (F-PKS) faction of the DPR RI also regrets the government’s slow response in dealing with data leaks. Considering that up to now, many of the data leakage cases seem to have been left without a clear follow-up action.
“This government may be confused about taking legal steps regarding data leakage, because there is no Personal Data Protection Law. We in the DPR have repeatedly urged the PDP Bill to be completed immediately, it has been discussed for 5 sessions, but the government is still tugging on several articles. In fact, if the government has the will, the IKN Bill can be completed in less than 40 days. In fact, if viewed from the level of urgency, the issue of personal data protection is more serious than IKN. Hundreds of millions of people’s data have been leaked without a clear leader,” said Sukamta.
Furthermore, the Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) electoral district legislator hopes that even though there is no PDP Law, the government must immediately fix its cyber security infrastructure, considering that people have entrusted their personal data on government agency servers.
“Beyond the matter of regulation, the government can immediately fix the protection system, update applications, data encryption, data backup to the management of cyber security management human resources. I’m sure BSSN already has a record of what needs to be addressed immediately. Many IT and cybersecurity experts in Indonesia can also be invited to collaborate. Hopefully this BI data leak case will be the last one. Don’t let people be forced to use government-owned applications without explanation and security guarantees,” he concluded.
