Earth Day is celebrated every April 22 with a different theme.
This year, Earth Day has the theme ‘Invest in Our Planet’ or ‘Invest in Our Planet’ which is taken from the issue of the climate crisis.
This theme was chosen to develop advocacy and significant action on the environment for a better earth.
Earth Day 2022 also carries the sub-theme ‘Nature in the Race to Zero’, which focuses on fossil fuels.
Quoted from the official website of the Earth Day organization, Earth Day is a good time to change all climates. Namely the business climate, political climate, and environmental climate.
History
Earth Day was launched by Senator Gaylord Nelson. The massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969 prompted the declaration of Earth Day.
This attention to earth problems is also based on the industrial years in the United States (US), where many factories emit toxic fumes into the air. In addition, factory waste is simply thrown into the river.
Earth Day was celebrated for the first time on April 22, 1970 in the United States.
Starting in 1969, Nelson continued to promote environmental awareness and saw the importance of paying attention to the health of the earth. This idea then received wide support and reached its peak on April 22, 1970.
At that time, history recorded that millions of people took to the streets, demonstrated and thronged Fifth Avenue in New York to condemn the “earth destroyers”.
The demonstration also brought positive results because a new federal agency was formed to deal with environmental problems, namely the United States Environmental Protection Agency which is now called the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
