Idnaround.com – At the Philanthropy Asia Summit 2024, Startup Mycotech Lab (MYCL) succeeded in securing an investment of 250 thousand Singapore dollars, almost equivalent to IDR 3 billion. Originating from Bandung, West Java, this startup was selected as a mentee of the Amplifier program, facilitated by the Center for Impact Investing and Practices (CIIP) and Philanthropy Asia Alliance (PAA) on April 15.

MYCL’s founder, Adi Reza, elaborated on their business model centered around producing sustainable biomaterials to replace leather, using mycelium mushrooms. This composite material is branded as Mylea™.

“The materials produced by MYCL are formed through a sustainable processing of raw materials, such as agricultural waste, using mycelium technology,” said Reza when contacted by Tempo, Sunday, April 28 2024.

“The materials produced by MYCL are formed through a sustainable processing of raw materials, such as agricultural waste, using mycelium technology,” said Reza when contacted by Tempo, Sunday, April 28 2024.

Reza explained that mycelium technology allows MYCL to carry out the tanning process using mushrooms, without having to use animal skin and dangerous chemicals. He claims that the process of making the leather-like material reduces carbon emissions by 16.8 percent, saves water by 70 percent, and conserves energy by 17 percent.

“The company makes a profit through selling products in the form of leather sheets,” he said.

“Mylea has several performances that are equivalent to standard leather for shoes, such as flexibility, rubbing, tensile and tear,” he said.

Reza explained that MYCL is currently transitioning towards commercialization scale. He stated that access to funding provided by CIIP could facilitate the process of increasing the scale of MYCL production.

According to him, the grant funds can be used to increase production capacity and develop the business further. Apart from that, Reza also hopes that Mylea™ will be further strengthened in the Singapore and Japanese markets.

Reza also revealed that several technologies owned by MYCL have been protected through patents and trade secrets, so that they can improve product quality while maintaining affordable production costs.
