JAKARTA — Coordinating Minister for Downstreaming and Energy Transition, who also serves as Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, revealed the reasons behind Indonesia’s decision to cut gas exports to Singapore. Bahlil explained that the move was driven by two main factors: ongoing maintenance on gas pipeline facilities (shutdown) and the priority to meet domestic demand.

“This occurred firstly due to facility maintenance and shutdown. Secondly, there is an urgent domestic demand,” Bahlil stated at his office in Central Jakarta on Monday (10/26/2026).

When asked about potential geopolitical tensions or conflicts with Singapore behind the policy, Bahlil firmly denied the rumors. He assured that the reduction was purely based on technical considerations and national priorities.

“There is no conflict whatsoever,” Bahlil emphasized.

Reduction Complies with Contractual Terms

Bahlil stressed that the cut in gas supply to Singapore does not violate any existing contract agreements between the two nations. According to data from the Ministry of ESDM, Indonesia’s total pipeline gas exports to Singapore reach 409.55 BBTUD, sourced from two primary regions: the Natuna Sea and Sumatra.

Out of that total volume, the reduction amounts to only 31 BBTUD, or approximately 8% of total exports. According to Bahlil, this volume adjustment falls strictly within the contractual tolerance limits, where the minimum contract threshold stands between 91 and 92 BBTUD.

He also urged all parties not to question Indonesia’s commitment to honoring international agreements.

“Under the direction of President Prabowo, our country honors contracts and regulations. So do not lecture Indonesia on maintaining and respecting commitments. The 31 BBTUD cut remains within the minimum contract limits,” Bahlil asserted.

Emphasizing Equal Treatment in Bilateral Relations

Furthermore, Bahlil called on Singapore and other partner countries to maintain mutual respect in bilateral relations, particularly within the energy sector.

“The Indonesian government respects rules, especially the Minister of ESDM. We hold rules in high regard. But I also ask that while you expect respect, you do not mock other nations. That is where our principle of togetherness lies; we must have equal treatment,” Bahlil remarked.

In addition to pipeline gas, Bahlil noted that Indonesia continues to fulfill its export commitments for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which total up to 146 cargoes to various international partners.
