IDNAround –  Indonesia and the United Nations are working together under the National Blue Agenda Action Partnership to support the nation in pursuing Blue Agenda Development and building more sustainable marine economic growth.

A sustainable marine economy is necessary for Indonesia and other maritime countries because it can help generate higher income from sea-based activities as well as assist in the preservation of marine biodiversity through the restoration of marine and coastal ecosystems, Deputy for Maritime Resources Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment Jodi Mahardi said.

“We and the United Nations are working together to build strategic partnerships in pushing for development in the field of marine resources in a sustainable manner, in accordance with the main objectives,” she added in a statement on Thursday.

Mahardi said the Indonesian government appreciates any assistance extended, whether in the short or medium term, for accelerating the achievement of its development targets in the maritime sector.

He also urged the relevant stakeholders to join the National Blue Agenda Action Partnership, which is set to be unveiled on November 14, 2022, at the Ocean 20 side event leading up to the G20 Summit in Bali.

Meanwhile, UN Resident Coordinator for Indonesia, Valerie Julliand, stressed that healthy oceans are very important for human survival.

“Therefore, the United Nations is happy to join the Indonesian government and development partners to build a sustainable marine economy,” she said.

Julliand emphasized the 3Cs, or coordination, collaboration, and commitment, for ensuring that all parties complement each other effectively and efficiently and contribute significantly to the government’s National Medium-Term Development Plan regarding marine resources.

The 3C strategy is also expected to help the nation tap into the potential of the blue economy for achieving the sustainable development goals.

Under the National Blue Agenda Actions Partnership, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment and the United Nations team in Indonesia are collaborating with government ministries, agencies, as well as the diplomatic community to support Indonesia’s position as a global leader on the Blue Agenda.

The Blue Agenda seeks to support sustainable growth in the maritime sector. Strategic support for Indonesia from the United Nations is focused on four aspects: blue health, blue food, blue innovation, and blue finance.
