JAKARTA — The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, and the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, have agreed to significantly reinforce the strategic partnership between their nations. This comprehensive step spans several priority sectors, ranging from economy and investment to energy transition and human resource development.
This high-level commitment was conveyed directly by President Prabowo during a joint press statement. The announcement was released following a productive bilateral assembly between the two state leaders at the Istana Merdeka, Jakarta, on Monday (June 15, 2026).
President Prabowo emphasized that President Steinmeier’s state visit carries profound geopolitical significance. The meeting takes place amidst increasingly complex and uncertain global dynamics.
According to the Head of State’s analysis, elevating bilateral ties between Indonesia and Germany serves as a highly strategic, tactical movement. This framework is essential to preserve regional stability while simultaneously driving sustainable economic growth.
“This visit represents a vital momentum amid global dynamics that are increasingly filled with uncertainty. Strengthening and sustaining the partnership between Indonesia and Germany is a shared priority,” President Prabowo asserted firmly.
Anticipating the 75th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations
President Prabowo also highlighted that this state visit serves as the initial milestone leading up to the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-Germany diplomatic relations. This historic milestone is scheduled to be officially commemorated in 2027.
The bilateral relationship, which has stood firm for decades, is deemed increasingly relevant to be upgraded. Indonesia aims to broaden its portfolio of mutually beneficial cooperation (win-win solution) for both nations.
During the formal bilateral session, both leaders engaged in deep discussions regarding numerous expansion avenues. The talks focused heavily on the economy, macro-investments, green energy transition, national energy security, vocational training, and the labor sector.
President Prabowo specifically underscored the importance of accelerating economic integration between Indonesia and the European Union. A primary focus of this effort is expediting the finalization of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA).
“We highly hope that Germany can continue to play an active, leading role in the finalization process of the agreement at the European Union level so that its benefits can be immediately felt by businesses and communities in both nations,” President Prabowo explained.
Investment Invitation for Semiconductors and Critical Mineral Supply Chains
In the realm of direct investment, President Prabowo openly invited German authorities and corporate giants to expand their business footprints within Indonesia’s national strategic sectors. Investment avenues are wide open in renewable energy transitions, industrial downstreaming, electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem construction, semiconductor fabrication, and connectivity infrastructure.
Furthermore, President Prabowo offered promising collaborative opportunities in managing supply chains for critical minerals and rare earth elements. These commodities represent the most vital building blocks of modern global industrial transformation.
“We invite Germany to participate in developing critical mineral and rare earth supply chains, including joining various infrastructure development projects across Indonesia,” stated President Prabowo, mapping out the nation’s vast natural resource potential.
President Prabowo also welcomed various bilateral economic cooperation programs that have successfully rolled out in the field. Notable examples include the Competitiveness Industrial Modernization and Trade Acceleration (CITA) framework and the Partnering in Business with Germany program, which specifically fosters the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
He also shared the significant announcement that Indonesia will officially host the second Joint Economic and Investment Committee (JEIC) session later this year.
Deploying Professional Nurses via the Global Skills Partnership Framework
Turning to the labor sector, President Prabowo expressed high appreciation for the signing of the Letter of Intent regarding the Global Skills Partnership in nursing sciences. According to his assessment, this cooperation serves as a concrete mechanism to boost the quality of national human capital.
The program effectively opens up vast career pipelines for professional Indonesian healthcare workers to establish international careers in Europe. Indonesia also harbors ambitions to expand technical labor absorption within Germany’s high-tech industrial sectors.
“Indonesia deeply appreciates the signing of the Letter of Intent regarding the Global Skills Partnership in the nursing sector. We also aim to expand employment paths for Indonesian professionals in Germany, including within high-technology fields,” the President noted.
Beyond breaking down economic and investment challenges, both heads of state exchanged strategic views regarding global geopolitical shifts. President Prabowo confirmed that Indonesia and Germany share the fundamental stance that all international conflicts must be resolved through dialogic tables, diplomatic channels, and reinforced multilateral frameworks.
Concluding his remarks, President Prabowo reiterated the vital strategic importance of Germany and the European Union in maintaining global security margins. This partnership is expected to develop robustly moving forward.
“I firmly believe that Germany needs to play a more active and vital role on the global stage. Indonesia requires a robust partnership with Germany and the European Union. President Steinmeier’s visit today stands as undeniable proof that this relationship is crucial and will continue to be reinforced in the future,” President Prabowo concluded.
