IDNAround – Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo officially revoked the COVID-19 pandemic status today, June 21, 2023. The country is now entering the endemic phase.
“After more than three years of fighting together against the COVID-19 pandemic, starting today, Wednesday, June 21, 2023, the government decided to revoke the pandemic status and we are entering an endemic period,” Jokowi said in a statement, Wednesday.
According to him, this decision was taken after taking into account the daily number of positive cases which is close to zero. In addition, the survey results show that 99 percent of Indonesian people already have antibodies. “WHO had also revoked the status of the public health emergency of international concern,” he added.
Nevertheless, Jokowi asked the public to stay cautious and keep practicing a healthy and clean lifestyle. As the pandemic status is lifted, he hoped that the national economy will further grow and improve the quality of people’s socio-economic life.
COVID-19 treatments are no longer subsidized
Previously on June 18, 2023, Jokowi stated that ending the pandemic status has consequences. One of them is that the government will no longer bear the costs of medical treatments for Covid-19 patients.
Jokowi also said 452 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to date. Thus, he claimed that the immunity level of the Indonesian people against the virus has reached 98 percent.
