Jakarta – Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Moh. Rano Alfath, expressed his appreciation for President Prabowo Subianto’s presence at the International Workers’ Day (May Day) commemoration held at the National Monument (Monas), Jakarta, on Wednesday (May 1, 2025). According to Rano, the President’s direct involvement demonstrated the state’s support for the aspirations and struggles of the working class.
“President Prabowo has shown extraordinary commitment. He came in person to stand among the workers, delivered a heartfelt message, and presented several concrete steps showing that the state does not remain silent regarding the fate of its workers,” Rano said in a press statement on Tuesday (May 2, 2025).
Rano emphasized that the President’s attendance was not merely symbolic but carried historical significance. He noted that the last time a President of Indonesia attended a May Day event was in 1965, when President Soekarno greeted workers directly.
“It has been 60 years since President Soekarno last attended a May Day celebration. Today, President Prabowo came not just for formality, but with a clear vision and political courage to address critical labor issues,” he stated.
The politician from the National Awakening Party (PKB) also highlighted several policies proposed by the President, including the establishment of a National Workers’ Welfare Council, the creation of a Task Force on Termination of Employment (PHK), the abolition of the outsourcing system, and support for honoring Marsinah as a National Hero.
“These efforts reflect not only economic concerns but also historical recognition and social justice for workers. The President clearly understands labor issues in a comprehensive manner,” Rano added.
Furthermore, Rano welcomed President Prabowo’s responsiveness to workers’ concerns regarding the rising burden of income tax. He noted that the President’s statement—that large taxes should only be applied to those with high incomes—demonstrates his alignment with the interests of ordinary citizens.
“We heard firsthand how the President expressed a stance that prioritizes the people’s well-being, especially in today’s challenging economic climate,” he said.
Appreciation for the National Police
In addition to praising the President, Rano also extended his appreciation to the Indonesian National Police (Polri), particularly the Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya), for professionally and humanely overseeing the May Day demonstrations. He commended the police for their swift response in handling disturbances, including an attempted infiltration by an anarchist group near the House of Representatives complex.
“We appreciate our colleagues in the National Police, especially Polda Metro Jaya, who acted swiftly, professionally, and with a persuasive approach. Overall, the May Day rallies were safe and under control, despite disturbances from external parties,” Rano said.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between freedom of expression and public security in a democratic country. According to him, the security forces managed to fulfill their duties without infringing on citizens’ constitutional rights.
“The state was fully present. The people could voice their aspirations, the security forces carried out their duties humanely, and the President listened directly to the people’s voices. This is the kind of democratic ecosystem we must protect together,” he concluded.
