IdnAround.com – Vietnam’s contingent faced a disappointing outcome at the 2024 Olympics, with none of their athletes securing a single medal. The Southeast Asian nation sent 16 athletes to compete in 11 sports at the Paris 2024 Olympics, including archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, canoeing, cycling, judo, rowing, shooting, swimming, and weightlifting.
Archery, badminton, boxing, shooting, and swimming had the most Vietnamese participants, with four athletes each. Unfortunately, none of them advanced far and were eliminated early in their respective events.
The highest achievement came from 23-year-old female shooter Trinh Thu Vinh, who finished fourth in the women’s 10m air pistol event.
Vietnam’s last hope for a medal rested on Nguyen Thi Huong in the women’s single 200m canoe event on Thursday, August 8, 2024. However, she was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Nguyen Thi Huong’s defeat confirmed Vietnam’s failure to win any medals at the 2024 Olympics. This marks the second consecutive Olympic disappointment for Vietnam, following their lackluster performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
This Olympic result starkly contrasts with Vietnam’s success at the 2023 SEA Games, where they dominated the region with 136 gold, 105 silver, and 114 bronze medals.
Since reuniting, Vietnam has participated in 11 Olympic Games since 1980, winning a total of five medals. Their best performance was at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where they secured one gold and one silver medal, both contributed by male shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh, marking their first-ever Olympic gold.
