How Effective Is Bareskrim Investigative Accountability in Prosecuting Importation Suspects? #ReserseBekerja

JAKARTA — Resolving criminal offenses in Indonesia requires consistency in investigative procedures focused on reinforcing admissible physical evidence rather than relying solely on rapid arrests. Modern law enforcement demands precision from investigative teams in processing intelligence from initial reporting stages to case file completion at prosecutorial levels.

Through structured analysis of physical evidence, digital tracking, and inter-agency collaboration, law enforcement constructs robust evidentiary frameworks for judicial review. This methodology ensures case processing remains measured and legally accountable.

Immigration System Collaboration and Transnational Interdiction

The Special Economic Crimes Directorate (Dittipideksus) of Bareskrim Polri arrested Tatang Winata (TW), a fugitive wanted in connection with smuggling illegal used mobile phones and baby supplies from South Korea. The suspect was apprehended upon landing at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

“Investigative teams from the Special Economic Crimes Directorate of Bareskrim Polri executed a forced arrest against suspect Tatang Winata (TW) on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at Soekarno-Hatta Airport,” stated Director of Special Economic Crimes Brigadier General Ade Safri Simanjuntak on Thursday (8/10/2026).

“Suspect TW fled abroad during the ongoing investigation into the illegal smuggling of used smartphones and baby products from South Korea into Indonesia,” he continued.

Ade Safri explained that investigators initially received flight tracking alerts from Soetta Airport Immigration personnel regarding TW’s movements. The suspect was flagged within Indonesia’s immigration system due to a prior travel ban request issued by investigators.

TW was identified arriving from Seoul aboard Garuda Indonesia flight GA879, business class seat 7A, traveling the Incheon (ICN) to Jakarta (CGK) route. Investigators intercepted TW at the International Arrivals Immigration Checkpoint (TPI) in Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

“At approximately 8:00 PM WIB, the investigative team executed the arrest accompanied by Soetta Airport Immigration officers,” Ade Safri detailed.

From TW’s possession, investigators confiscated physical evidence comprising one Samsung Galaxy A16 5G smartphone, one iPhone 16 Pro, a passport, a national ID card, and flight ticket GA879 under his name. Following the arrest, the suspect was transported directly to Bareskrim Polri Headquarters.

“Following formal questioning, suspect TW was placed under detention at the Bareskrim Polri Detention Center,” Ade Safri noted.

Financial and Material Evidence Reinforcement

In handling this alleged illegal importation case, the Anti-Smuggling Law Enforcement Task Force of Bareskrim Polri designated three total suspects: DCP alias Peter, MT, and TW. Investigators seized physical evidence with total estimated valuations reaching hundreds of billions of rupiah.

The breakdown of confiscated physical evidence includes:

  1. iPhone and Android smartphones alongside spare parts, LCD screens, batteries, motherboards, and other components totaling approximately 50,000 units valued at around IDR 250 billion.

  2. Baby care equipment totaling 256,300 units valued at around IDR 3.075 billion.

“The total estimated value of seized physical evidence reaches approximately IDR 253,075,600,000,” revealed Ade Safri.

Case files for the two other suspects, DCP alias Peter and MT, have been declared complete (P21) by public prosecutors. Investigators are currently completing final case filing procedures for suspect TW to be submitted to prosecutors.

For his actions, TW is charged under trade regulations and related illegal importation offenses pursuant to Article 111 in conjunction with Article 47 paragraph (1) of Law No. 7 of 2014 on Trade, in conjunction with Article 20 or Article 21 of Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code.
