Janice Tjen Breaks Record, Reaches WTA 250 Sao Paulo Open Final

SAO PAULO – Indonesian tennis star Janice Tjen has made history by securing a spot in the final of the WTA 250 Sao Paulo Open 2025 in Brazil. She achieved this landmark feat after defeating the sixth seed, Francesca Jones from Great Britain, in a hard-fought semifinal match.

This victory is more than just a ticket to the final; it ends Indonesia’s 23-year-long drought in WTA tournaments. Tjen is now the first Indonesian female tennis player to reach a WTA final since Angelique Widjaja accomplished the feat in 2002.

In the intense semifinal, Janice Tjen displayed remarkable determination. She initially fell behind in the first set, engaging in a tight battle against Jones. However, with composure and a strong mindset, Tjen managed to secure the set in a tie-break with a final score of 7-6.

Tjen’s dominance continued into the second set. With her confidence soaring, she took control of the match and closed it out with a decisive 6-3 score. The win not only earned her a spot in the final but also solidified her position as Indonesia’s highest-ranked female singles tennis player.

The Challenge in the Final Round

In the final, Janice Tjen will face the winner of the other semifinal match between Renata Zarazua from Mexico and Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah from France. Regardless of her opponent, Tjen is expected to give her all in a bid to bring home the championship title.

Janice Tjen’s success in reaching the WTA 250 final is a breath of fresh air for Indonesian tennis. This achievement is hoped to motivate other young Indonesian players to perform at an international level and once again raise Indonesia’s name on the world tennis stage.
