American Basketball Player Jarred Dwayne Shaw Arrested for Drug Offense in Indonesia

TANGERANG – American basketball player Jarred Dwayne Shaw (JDS) has been arrested by the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police in connection with a drug-related case. Shaw was detained after receiving a package containing Delta 9 THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), a type of narcotic.

Shaw was apprehended on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at 9:47 PM WIB, in an apartment located in Cisauk, Tangerang Regency. In a video obtained by authorities, Shaw is seen wearing a black T-shirt and shorts and can be heard shouting “help… help” as police attempted to arrest him. He resisted and tried to push officers away before being restrained by several officers.

“This drug offense involves candies containing Class I narcotics of the Delta 9 THC type and involves a professional basketball player identified as JDS. The arrest was carried out by the Narcotics Unit of the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police,” said Police Chief Kombes Ronald FC Sipayung in a press statement on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.

Jarred Shaw has now been named a suspect and taken into custody. He faces severe legal consequences, including the death penalty.

Key Facts in Jarred Dwayne Shaw’s Drug Case:

1. Case Uncovered Through Customs and Police Cooperation

According to Kombes Ronald, the case was revealed through a joint investigation between police and Soekarno-Hatta Airport Customs. It began with a suspicious international shipment from Thailand that authorities suspected contained illegal drugs.

Customs officers identified a package sent from Bangkok under airway bill number EE206616913TH, sent by Jitnarec Konchinda. The package contained 20 packets of candies labeled “Vita Bite”, which were found to contain 132 cannabis-infused candies with a total gross weight of 869 grams.

“An arrest was made on the package recipient, the suspect JDS, on May 7, 2025, at around 9:47 PM in the apartment lobby,” said Ronald.

2. Cannabis Candies Shipped from Thailand

The investigation revealed that the candies originated from Thailand. Although Shaw’s name was not listed as the recipient, further examination led police to him.

“The sender was identified as Jitnarec Konchinda, with an address at Pibuldham Building 8, Bangkok, Thailand,” Ronald confirmed.

3. Shaw Intended to Distribute the Drugs to Fellow Basketball Players

During questioning, Shaw admitted that he intended to share the cannabis candies with his fellow basketball players in Indonesia.

“The suspect JDS intended to distribute the candies containing Class I narcotics (Delta 9 THC) to his friends who are also basketball players in Indonesia, once the package had been received,” said Ronald.

Although the package did not bear Shaw’s name, police eventually confirmed through joint investigations that he was the intended recipient.

“The package was addressed to someone with initials IM, at an apartment in Cisauk, Tangerang. A joint investigation with Customs confirmed that the package was indeed for JDS,” Ronald added.

4. Shaw Helped Design the Candy Packaging to Evade Detection

Authorities also revealed that Shaw was involved in designing the packaging of the cannabis candies to avoid detection by authorities. His strategy, however, failed.

“The suspect JDS personally chose the design of the candy wrappers to avoid detection by authorities,” Ronald said.

5. Facing the Death Penalty

Jarred Dwayne Shaw is now facing multiple charges under Indonesia’s strict narcotics law. The charges carry a maximum penalty of death or life imprisonment.

“He is charged under Article 114 (2), subsidiary Article 113 (2), and further subsidiary Article 112 (2) of Law No. 35/2009 on Narcotics, which carries penalties including death, life imprisonment, or a minimum of 6 years and up to 20 years in prison,” Ronald concluded.
