IDNAround.com – Dandhy Dwi Laksono, director of the documentary film Dirty Vote, explains the reasons behind his decision to make and release the film during the quiet period of the 2024 General Election (Pemilu) and Presidential Election (Pilpres).
He hopes that the film can serve as an educational tool for the public ahead of voting day which is scheduled to take place on February 14 2024.
“Dirty Vote should be a reflective spectacle during the calm period of the election. It is hoped that in the three crucial days leading up to election day, this film will educate the public and there will be lots of discussion spaces and forums held,” said Dandhy in a press statement received on Sunday (11/ 2/2024).
Apart from that, Dandhy also invited all levels of society to temporarily put aside political preferences for presidential and vice presidential candidates, and follow the contents of the documentary with an open mind.
“There are times when we become supporters of the presidential and vice presidential candidates. But today, I want to invite everyone to watch this film as citizens,” said Dandhy.
The documentary examines allegations of possible violations in the stages of the 2024 General Election and Presidential Election. The film debuted via the home production platform WatchDoc on YouTube on February 11 2024 at 11.00 WIB, coinciding with the start of the election quiet period.
The film features three constitutional law experts: Feri Amsari, Bivitri Susanti, and Zainal Arifin Mochtar, who explain the potential irregularities that occur in various aspects related to the democratic process in Indonesia.These experts explained the violations that occurred in various aspects related to the General Election process in Indonesia which adheres to a democratic system.
The making of the film Dirty Vote was the result of collaboration between various civil institutions. According to Joni Aswira, who is the General Chair of the Indonesian Society of Environmental Journalists (SIEJ) and also the producer of the film, the documentary also records the results of research into alleged fraud in the general election that was carried out by a civil society coalition.
Joni explained that the production costs for the film Dirty Vote were collected through crowd funding, donations from individuals and also from various institutions.
“The costs are joint venture. Apart from that, Dirty Vote was also worked on in a very short time of around two weeks, starting from the research process, production, editing, to release. “It’s even shorter than working on the KPK’s End Game (2021),” said Joni.
A number of institutions collaborating on the film are the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI), Bangsa Mahardika, New Indonesia Expedition, Ekuatorial, Indonesian People’s Faction, Greenpeace Indonesia, Indonesia Corruption Watch, Jatam, Pause for Climate, KBR, LBH Pers, Lokataru, Luludem, Greetings 4 Fingers, Satya Bumi, Themis Indonesia, Walhi, Dewi Justice Foundation, Kurawal Foundation, YLBHI, and WatchDoc.
Considered slander
Deputy Chair of the Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka National Campaign Team (TKN), Habiburokhman, responded to the documentary film Dirty Vote. According to him, the film is dominated by a narrative full of hatred and is considered to have no scientific basis for the accusations it conveys.
“TKN responded as follows. That in a democratic country everyone is free to express their opinions. However, we need to convey that most of what the film conveys is something that has a slanderous tone, a narrative of hatred that has an assumptive tone, and is very unscientific,” said Habiburokhman in press conference at the TKN Media Center, South Jakarta, Sunday (11/2/2024).
Habiburokhman also questioned the capacity of the three figures, namely Bivitri Susanti, Zainal Arifin Mochtar, and Feri Amsari who explained the alleged fraud in the election process in the film.
He accused the film of appearing to want to sabotage the 2024 election process.
“And why do I feel like there is a tendency, a desire to sabotage the election. It’s not sabotage, it’s wanting to degrade this election, with a very baseless narrative,” said Habiburokhman.
Habiburokhman also interpreted that the release of the film right on the day of the general election’s quiet period was part of a strategy by certain parties to launch political attacks after the campaign period ended.
“Yes, because they are no longer able to use fair methods to fight electorally,” he added.
