Thesis May No Longer Mandatory for College Students

IDNAround – The Indonesian Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Nadiem Makarim has launched a new regulation regarding graduation standards for undergraduate or postgraduate students, where a thesis may no longer mandatory.

This rule is written in the Regulation of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Number 53 of 2023 concerning Quality Assurance of Higher Education.

However, the condition is that the student study program concerned has implemented a project-based curriculum or other similar forms.

As for students studying on campuses that have not implemented the curriculum, the requirement for passing the course is the final project which also doesn’t have to be in the form of a thesis.

Other forms are prototypes, projects, and other similar forms. This final project can also be done individually or in groups.

“The final project can take various forms. It can take the form of prototypes, projects, or other forms, so it is not only a thesis or dissertation. This doesn’t mean that a thesis may no longer, but this decision is up to each university,” Minister Makarim said as quoted from the Indonesian minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Youtube on Tuesday.

In the event themed “Merdeka Belajar: Transformation of National Standards and Higher Education Accreditation”, Minister Makarim continued that in modern times like today, the ability of students is no longer measured by a thesis but also through other tasks.

“But in this day and age, there are various ways to show the ability or competence of our graduates (students),” he remarked.

“As example, the ability of people in the field of environmental conservation, do we want to test their ability to write or thesis scientifically? Or do we want to test their ability to implement projects in the field?” he added.

“It shouldn’t be the Ministry of Education and Culture that determines this,”

Minister Makarim hopes that with this regulation, each study program can more freely determine the requirements for graduate competencies through a thesis or other forms.

However, for master’s students must publish papers in accredited scientific journals, and doctoral students must publish papers in verified international journals.
