Yogyakarta Beefs Up Operation to Anticipate Foreign Tourists Working Illegally as in Bali

IDNAround – As one of the popular tourist destinations, Yogyakarta is anticipating foreign tourists working illegally in the region following the recent phenomenon of foreigners running a business in Bali without a working visa.

The regional immigration office kicked off the joint operation to monitor foreigners in Sleman Regency on June 14, 2023. “This joint operation targets two companies and two international schools hiring foreign workers,” the Yogyakarta Immigration Office head, M Yani Firdaus, said on Wednesday, June 14.

The operation involved the immigration office, Yogyakarta Public Order Agency, Yogyakarta Police, Regional Military Command 072/Pamungkas, and the Yogyakarta Manpower and Transmigration Agency. The team monitored the presence and activities of the foreign workers, as well as checked their immigration documents, such as passports and residence permits.

“From the companies and schools we take as the sample, there is no violation committed by the foreigners,” Yani said.

Based on the investigation, the foreign nationals in the region are relatively obedient and comply with the rules. “Generally, the foreigners who work there know enough about the rules and are also willing to respect local wisdom and socio-cultural norms in Yogyakarta,” he explained. “The foreign workers also have complete immigration documents.”

According to Yani, the operation was carried out by adopting an open and persuasive surveillance system “to prevent clashes with foreign nationals. The team also examined the administration, particularly by collecting data and information from residents, prior to the field investigation to anticipate friction.
