Jakarta to Address Digital Billboards Visually Distracting Drivers

IDNAround – Jakarta Transportation Agency Head Syafrin Liputo stated that his side will review digital billboards or videotrons which are considered to visually distract road users, especially drivers.

This follows the high number of public complaints over bright lights of digital advertising videos on a number of capital streets which cause visual distraction.

“We will check it,” Syafrin said when met at the City Hall on Thursday, May 25, 2023.

According to him, there are no rules limiting the number of digital billboards installed across the city. Organizers may install them as long as they pay attention to the lighting.

“So we surely have to look again at how strong the lighting is so that drivers feel disturbed by the presence of videotrons,” said Syafrin.

He also claimed that the agency had asked the billboard organizers to measure the lighting of their advertisements so as not to cause distraction and lead drivers to lose concentration while driving.

People turned to social media complaining about the lighting of videotrons in Jakarta. The complaints are highlighted by a Twitter account @PartaiSocmed. The account questioned the permission of the billboards which are increasingly mushrooming in the city area and cause visual distraction.
