IDNAround – Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres was shocked and stunned to see photos and videos of Israeli police beating worshipers at the Al Aqsa mosque, east Jerusalem.
Israeli police reportedly stormed into the Al Aqsa mosque complex on Wednesday (5/4) dawn local time.
The Israeli police themselves claim that they were forced to storm into the Al Aqsa compound because of a number of masked Palestinians who they call agitators. Israeli police said the residents locked and barricaded themselves inside the mosque using fireworks, sticks and stones.
UN Secretary-General’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Guterres had seen images of “violence and beatings” inside the holy site.
The incident is all the more concerning because it coincides with “the supposedly peaceful and non-violent calendar of observances of the Jewish, Christian and Muslim religions.”
“Places of worship should only be used for peaceful worship,” Dujarric said.
The countries that are members of the Arab League previously held an emergency meeting to discuss the incident of the Israeli police attack on Jerusalem.
As reported by Reuters, the meeting was held after Jordan called for a meeting in coordination with Egyptian and Palestinian officials. However, it is not yet known where the leaders will hold the meeting.
The meeting itself was carried out after the escalation of the conflict in Jerusalem after the Israeli police attack on the Al Aqsa Mosque.
The action left a number of Palestinians injured by rubber bullets and beaten by Israeli police, according to a medical officer from the Palestinian Red Cross.
One Palestinian woman who declined to be named said the police threw stun grenades at the worshippers, one of which hit her.
“I was sitting on a chair reading [the Koran]. They then threw stun grenades, one of which hit me in the chest,” the woman said, panting.
